DESCRIPTION: Approximate Height in Hands – 14hh
Ember is a 5-year-old mare from Eagle, NV, who was rounded up early 2020. She’s about 14 hands with a pretty petite build. Important note: I would NOT recommend this horse for a beginner or a timid person. She needs a confident but fair leader. This is because she is constantly looking for ways to avoid pressure and test your leadership. I’m sure in time she will settle and could be used by all levels of riders, but at this time she needs a confident, experienced person. Ember is good to catch, lead, load. You can touch her all over and pick up all four feet, and she has been trimmed a few times. She stands tied, has been introduced to hobbles, and can be saddled from either side when tied. She’s pretty good for the most part about not needing a lot of groundwork before riding. She can walk and trot bareback and walk, trot, and lope saddled. She has been introduced to the concepts of turning on the hind, side passing, and two tracking. She likes being out on the trails more than in the arena. She loves grooming and attention and will walk up to anyone. There are a few things that have been a struggle during training. She will do anything to steal a bite of grass, no matter what you are doing. She’s getting better, but I don’t think it will be fixed completely in this short training period. She likes to shoulder out when doing circles at a trot and a lope. She has been getting better but again, only so much can be done in this time frame. She used to try to kick and bite, usually due to wanting to avoid pressure, but she’s much better now. Extra details: she can be ridden in a snaffle (she prefers one with tongue relief) or some other types of bits that offer tongue relief. She can be ridden in the two rein in a snaffle (3/8” bosal and a snaffle at the same time) and in a 5/8” hackamore. I think she prefers neck reining, as it’s an indirect pressure in comparison to using two hands. She stops and backs off my seat and has carried other riders with no issues. She has carried a flag, had a rope swung off on her, dragged a log, is cool with tarps, jumps over a small jump. She goes over the simple obstacle course with no hesitation and loads in a trailer easily. She’s very food motivated. I think she’d make a good cow or ranch pony, but she could go any direction with more training.
